WhatsApp wedding invitation

WhatsApp is where Indian wedding invitations actually live. Not a website, not an email — a family group, forwarded eleven times, watched on a phone at low volume. Designing for that is a specific discipline, and it is the reason some beautiful invitations land badly.

The compression problem, plainly

When you send a video on WhatsApp, it is re-encoded to save bandwidth. That re-encode is not gentle, and it destroys particular things first:

• Fine ornament. Delicate gold filigree behind text turns into grey noise.
• Thin serif strokes. High-contrast display typefaces lose their hairlines, so letters look broken.
• Low-contrast text. Cream text on a pale floral background can become genuinely unreadable.
• Fast motion. Quick pans and particle effects smear, because compression has fewer bits to spend on frames that change a lot.

Notice that all four are design decisions. This is why re-exporting a fragile design at a higher bitrate does not rescue it — WhatsApp will re-encode it anyway. The invitation has to be built to survive.

How we design for it

We set names heavier and larger than a print card would need, keep strong contrast between text and background, hold ornament away from the area directly behind the names, and slow the motion down so compression has less to fight. Then we check the result at phone scale before the draft goes to you — not on a large monitor, where everything looks fine.

Of our four design directions, modern cinematic survives compression best, because it relies on contrast and spacing rather than fine detail. Traditional elegance and royal heritage both work well too, provided the ornament is kept clear of the type — which is how we build them.

Chat and Status are two different cuts

A forwarded chat video and a Status post are not the same product:

1. Chat. Opens at a modest size, usually landscape or square, often watched with one thumb hovering over the next message. The names and the date have to register in the first two seconds.
2. Status. Full-screen vertical, with interface elements over the top and bottom of the frame. Anything important placed there gets covered.

Both versions are part of the project. We re-frame the layout for each rather than exporting one file and cropping it, because cropping a wide invitation to vertical is what puts half a name off-screen.

Status length

WhatsApp splits longer videos into multiple Status segments. For an invitation that is a real problem: the pacing breaks, and guests who tap away after the first segment never see your venue. We keep the Status cut inside the limit so it plays as one continuous piece — which usually means a tighter edit than the chat version, and that is by design.

A note on the e-card

Some relatives — often the ones you most want at the wedding — will not play a video at all. A matching static e-card solves that: same design, same palette, one image they can open instantly and zoom into. We include it in function sets and can add it to any project. See all services.
