A save-the-date has exactly one job: put your date in front of people early enough that they can protect it. Everything else — venue, function timings, who is invited to which event — belongs in the main invitation later.

That single job is why brevity matters so much here. A twenty-second save-the-date gets watched to the end and forwarded. A sixty-second one gets swiped past, and the date never registers.

Designed vertical first

Save-the-dates live on WhatsApp Status, Instagram Reels and Stories, which means 9:16 vertical. This is not a crop of a landscape design — a vertical crop of a wide invitation cuts names in half and leaves the date sitting under the caption bar.

We compose vertically from the start and keep the important lines inside the safe area, clear of the Story UI at the top and the caption and reply field at the bottom. Then we export a landscape or square version too, for the relatives who will only ever see it as a forwarded WhatsApp message.

When to send it

  • Local wedding: six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable.
  • Guests travelling within India: eight to ten weeks, so trains and flights can be booked at sensible prices.
  • Destination wedding, or guests coming from abroad: three to four months, because leave has to be applied for.

There is a real cost to sending it too early. People note the date, then lose it before the actual invitation lands. If your wedding is more than five months away, it is usually better to wait than to invite twice.

What works in fifteen seconds

Restraint. The save-the-dates that perform best do one thing well rather than three things at once:

  1. One image or one idea. A single strong photograph with the date over it, or a purely typographic treatment with a well-timed reveal. Not both.
  2. The date on screen long enough to read twice. Sounds obvious; it is the most common failure.
  3. Names large. On a Status watched at arm's length, the names are what identify the wedding instantly.
  4. An ending that stops cleanly. Reels loop. An invite that ends mid-motion feels unfinished every time it repeats.

Order it with the main invitation

Booking the save-the-date and the main invitation together costs less than ordering them separately, and the second one matches the first properly because both were planned at once. If you only want the save-the-date now, that is fine — we keep your direction on file so the invitation matches when you come back.

Which direction suits a save-the-date

Of our four design directions, soft floral and modern cinematic sit most naturally in a social feed — one warm, one restrained, both light enough for an announcement rather than a formal summons. Traditional elegance and royal heritage carry more ceremony, which is usually what you want held back for the main invitation so it feels like a step up.

Photographs, and a warning about them

Pre-wedding shoot photographs work beautifully in save-the-dates. Two things to watch. First, send original files — anything already forwarded through WhatsApp has been compressed and will look soft when scaled for video. Second, tell us the orientation of the shot you love: a wide landscape portrait cannot always be made to work in a 9:16 frame without cutting one of you out.

Save-the-dates, answered

What is a save-the-date video?

A short film — usually fifteen to twenty-five seconds — sent well before the full invitation. It carries one message: the date, and that you want the person there. Venue details and function timings come later, in the main invitation.

The point is to get the date into people's heads early, especially guests who need to book travel or leave.

When should we send a save-the-date?

For a local wedding, six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable. For a destination wedding, or where a lot of guests are travelling from abroad, three to four months gives people a real chance to plan.

Sending it too early has a cost: people note the date, then forget it by the time the actual invitation arrives.

How is it different from the main invitation?

Length and job. A save-the-date is short, light and built for social — it works as a Status, Reel or Story. The main invitation is longer, more formal, and covers every function with times and addresses.

They should share a visual language so guests recognise the second as coming from the same wedding as the first.

Can we use our own photos in it?

Yes, and save-the-dates are where photographs work best — a single strong picture with a date over it is often more effective than heavy animation.

Send the original file rather than a version already forwarded through WhatsApp. Forwarded pictures are compressed and go soft when scaled up for video.
